There are some things that never go out of fashion. Fish and chips by the sea. A paddle in the shallows. And, of course, building a sandcastle.
Whether you’re five or ninety-five, there’s something rather satisfying about turning a patch of sand into your very own seaside fortress. And with miles of beautiful beaches around Tenby and the surrounding coastline, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to finding the perfect spot.
The first challenge is choosing where to build.

Will it be the wide golden sands of North Beach? The sheltered shores of Castle Beach? Perhaps South Beach, where there’s enough room to build a castle so large it might need its own postcode.
Find a spot with plenty of space and, ideally, sand that’s just damp enough to hold together without turning into soup.
You don’t need much to become a master sand architect.

A bucket, a spade and a bit of imagination will do the trick. If you want to get serious, bring a trowel, a small brush and perhaps a spray bottle of water. Before you know it, you’ll be speaking about buttresses, battlements and moats as though you’ve spent years restoring castles.
Every great castle starts with a solid base.

Pack wet sand firmly into a bucket, turn it upside down and lift carefully. Repeat until you’ve created a sturdy foundation. Remember, even sandcastles need good groundwork.
This is where the fun begins.

Create towers, walls, drawbridges and moats. Decorate with shells, pebbles, seaweed or anything else you discover along the shoreline. There are no rules here—unless you’re building next to a sibling, in which case there are usually lots of rules.
A little water goes a long way.

Too dry and your masterpiece crumbles. Too wet and it becomes a rather expensive-looking puddle. A gentle spray every now and then helps keep everything standing proudly.
The best sandcastles aren’t always the biggest or the most impressive.

They’re the ones built while laughing with family, competing with friends, or simply enjoying a day beside the sea.
Over the years, we’ve seen some incredible creations on beaches around Tenby, Saundersfoot, Amroth, Freshwater East and beyond.
So now it’s your turn.
📸 Send us a photo of the best sandcastle you’ve built anywhere around Tenby and the surrounding coastline.
Was it a towering fortress? A dragon? A pirate ship? Or something that started as a castle and ended up looking more like a collapsed garden shed?
We’d love to see it!

Now then… who’s got the reigning sandcastle champion in the family?
