Pure West Radio’s DAB Countdown: Get Ready, Pembrokeshire!

Well, well, well—what a moment this is for Pure West Radio! The excitement is palpable as the station prepares for its next big leap: going live on DAB. Yes, the humble station that started just six years ago is about to get a whole lot bigger—and a whole lot clearer—thanks to Digital Audio Broadcasting. It’s like upgrading from a cosy cuppa to a full-blown afternoon tea with all the trimmings.

Later this autumn, Pure West will flick the switch on not one, not two, but five brand-new transmitters, lighting up the airwaves across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. Imagine that! From the golden sands of Tenby to the rolling hills of Carmarthen, they’ll be spreading their signature blend of chat, tunes, and good vibes far and wide.

DAB: A New Era for Pure West Radio

Now, you might be asking, “What’s all the fuss about with this DAB malarkey?” Well, let me tell you, it’s a pretty big deal. DAB brings you crystal-clear sound quality—no more fiddling with the dial, no more static. Just pure, unadulterated radio bliss.

And for Toby Ellis, the station’s director, this is a dream come true. “We’re absolutely buzzing,” Toby says, probably with a huge grin on his face. “Moving to DAB means we can expand in ways we never thought possible. It’s going to bring us to a whole new audience, and that’s just fantastic.”

He’s not wrong. Pure West Radio has been keeping Pembrokeshire entertained since 2018, but now, thanks to DAB, they’ll be reaching even more people. It’s a bit like when you discover that your local pub has opened up a second bar—suddenly, there’s more room, more people, and more fun to be had!

Tenby DAB Launch

Powered by People (and a Few Volunteers)

One of the things that makes Pure West Radio so special is its people. It’s not just the 13 dedicated staff that make the magic happen; oh no, it’s also over 100 volunteers who give their time, energy, and enthusiasm to keep the station going. Now, that’s community spirit for you.

“We’ve got an incredible team,” Toby says proudly. “The way we combine our staff with our brilliant volunteers is key to why we’re able to do so much. It means we can stay true to our local roots while still growing as a station.”

But here’s the thing: with DAB on the horizon, they’re looking for more folks to join the party. If you’ve got a flair for presenting, a knack for production, or a head for sales, then this could be your time to shine. As Toby puts it, “We’re always on the lookout for new talent to help us move forward.”

A Look Back, and a Look Forward

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of what we’ve achieved,” Toby reflects. “Since our very first broadcast on April 4, 2018, we’ve gone from strength to strength. This year alone, we’ve covered over 300 local events, and we’ve no plans to slow down any time soon.”

And why would they? With the DAB launch coming up, it’s all systems go at Pure West. Imagine being able to catch your favourite local station with perfect clarity as you cruise through the Pembrokeshire countryside or while you’re taking in the view from Tenby’s North Beach. It’s not just radio—it’s radio done right.

In the words of Toby himself, “We’ve got so much more to give—and with DAB, we’re just getting started.”
