We love to try different walking routes when visiting Tenby. It’s a great way to explore the coastline, capture some stunning photos and spot wildlife. We have often taken the Tenby to Saundersfoot walk, here’s all you need to know to give it a go on your next visit.
This is a really popular walk that goes along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Tenby to Saundersfoot. There are lots of things to see and enjoy on this route, cliff top paths, stunning beaches, plenty of wildlife and even woodland sections. I’m average fitness and this walk usually takes me around 3 hours depending on how much I stop to take photos!
A reasonable level of fitness is required for this walk, the paths are varied and some uneven. There are some steep inclines and declines and the majority of the walk is through woodland rather than a path right next to the ocean.
The walk begins on the front of Tenby and you will pass Castle Beach and St Catherine’s Island.
The coastal path then takes you past Tenby Castle. Here you can choose to include a circular walk following the line of the original curtain walls. It is also home to Tenby Museum & Art Gallery which is a great place to stop.
Once you are finished up at the castle the route heads north along the coast path to Monkstone Beach and you pass Lodge Valley woodland on the way. You can visit this secluded beach via seriously steep steps!
The walk continues to Rhode Wood before coming into Saundersfoot. The village is a very popular destination with its lovely harbour and wide blue flag beach. If you want to keep going the coast path will take you to Amroth with its half-mile-long, flat, sandy beach, and abundance of rock pools.
You can make this a circular walk and return the way you came. As it’s a 5-mile walk you’ll probably just want to go in one direction rather than going there and back again. You can walk one way and catch the bus back. It’s a 15/20 minute ride and the buses come regularly.
